Additive Manufacturing Engineer

Start-up seeks an experienced metal additive manufacturing engineer to help pioneer applied drone intelligence. You must have experience working extensively in the workflow of producing, analyzing, and optimizing the additive production of metal parts with no tolerance for failure, and doing so significantly faster than those around you think is achievable. You must have experience in project management, working with others to meet deliverables. Familiarity with bionics would be helpful for this position.

  • Be an active contributor within a team of engineers who perform the design, development, and testing of robotic hardware, optimizing and testing all facets of their hardware for the additive process using wire-feed approaches and fusion welding

  • Lead development of novel, original additive manufacturing techniques and processes that utilize fusion welding

  • Create requirements for new components and then convert those requirements into design frameworks for engineers to execute and produce

  • Consult with engineers, thermal and structural analysts, development engineers, materials and process engineers and other product team members to refine the process for testing, development, qualification and flight.

  • Generate optimized build files to produce high quality parts in minimum time with maximum consistency

  • Work with other engineers to help refine the design of existing parts and optimize new parts to leverage additive technology

  • Investigate properties, geometric accuracy, and surface finish results to develop optimal print parameters, heat treatments, and design allowables for existing and new alloys

  • Work interdisciplinary trades on processes that result in optimal additive part production

  • Work with new machines from installation through troubleshooting, calibration, and maintenance, while developing standard operating procedures

  • After hardware is produced, communicate results and feedback to engineers to continuously develop and improve hardware production

  • Interface with in-house fabrication and assembly workforce during design and prototype hardware builds. Incorporate any produciblity lessons learned by design change and drawing revision

  • Support development testing efforts by incorporating design changes if necessary to further improve hardware performance or reliability

  • Provide ongoing technical support to production effort with engineering change orders to make design changes that improve producibility or reliability


  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a relevant discipline

  • 3+ years of experience in fusion welding or development of metallic additive technologies

  • 2+ years of technical project management experience


  • Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a relevant discipline

  • Experience with additive simulation software or topology optimization software

  • Knowledge of various additive manufacturing and joining techniques for metals

  • Solid understanding of optics and lasers including fiber optics

  • Experience with operating additive machines, including parameter development and process control

  • Experience with setting up and running multifactorial design of experiments (DOE’s)

  • Familiar with material properties and attributes, particularly for titanium or nickel-based alloys, for use in cryogenic and high temperature environments

  • Experience with FEMAP, ANSYS, and similar structural analysis software tools

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with direct experience succinctly presenting recommendations or scope

  • Real-time operations experience on a complex system that has high consequences in the event of failure

  • Experience working in relation to government or defense entities

  • Passion for advancing the manufacturing industry, in all aspects

  • Able to work well in an integrated collaborative team environment

  • Highly self-motivated and able to prioritize and execute tasks in a high-pressure environment


  • Must be available to work extended hours and/or weekends as needed to support critical milestones or operations shifts.

  • Must be willing to travel to other Rosotics offices and customer locations as needed.
